🏀 IMPORTANT – NEW FIBA BASKETBALL RULE CHANGES 🏀
FIBA has introduced updated basketball rules effective 1 October 2026. These changes will impact how certain fouls and plays are interpreted in domestic basketball.
Here’s a quick rundown of the main changes:
🏀 Shooting Fouls
Clearer guidelines on when a player is considered to be in the act of shooting, particularly when driving to the basket. Passing the ball after being fouled means the player is no longer considered to be shooting.
⚠️ Technical Fouls
Technical fouls now fall into two categories:

Category 1: Behaviour such as arguing with referees, swearing or taunting opponents. These count towards game disqualification.

Category 2: Procedural infringements such as delaying the game or hanging on the ring. These do not count towards game disqualification.
🚨 Unsportsmanlike Fouls Have Changed
The previous unsportsmanlike foul has been replaced by two types:

Disruptive Foul: Illegal contact that deliberately stops play, such as stopping a fast break without attempting to play the ball.

Flagrant Foul: Dangerous, reckless or excessive physical contact.
Flagrant fouls count towards game disqualification; disruptive fouls do not.
🏀 Dribbling
Clarification of when a player loses control of the ball and when a second dribble is permitted.
🤝 Respect the Game
These changes reinforce the importance of player safety, sportsmanship and respect for referees.
